An Optimized Recovery Boiler Cleaning System, 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference
Fouling of heat transfer surfaces in Kraft recovery boilers reduces the thermal efficiency and in severe cases leads to pluggage and unscheduled boiler shutdowns. To address this, numerous facilities have conducted fundamental research on particle deposition and boiler fouling. Boiler operators have also applied their experiences, and this combined effort has lead to improvements in boiler design and operations that have helped to reduce these unscheduled pluggage outages.
However, once this occurs the tendency has been to increase boiler throughput, which in turn results in increased deposition and fouling. This cycle results in cleaning requirements that are continually changing both in a given operating period and over time. In order to meet the higher cleaning demands, poppet valve pressures of the sootblowers have to be gradually increased introducing two additional constraints.
