A study was conducted to determine the cause of superheater tube failures occurring just above the roof penetration in a North American recovery boiler. Several failed tubes and fourteen unfailed tubes were removed from the boiler for examination. A failure analysis was conducted on one of the failed tubes, and the unfailed tubes were destructively examined to determine if cracks were developing in those tubes. The metallurgical examination of the failed tube suggested a mechanical fatigue damage mechanism, and the inspection of the unfailed tubes found several small cracks in four of the fourteen tubes. Strain gauges were installed on two superheater tubes, and these are being used to monitor the motion of the tubes during operation. The strain gauges are providing information on the extent and direction of the superheater platen motion.
