Minimizing the Impact of Stress Assisted Corrosion in Paper Mill Boilers, 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference

PressWeb.jpg

The exact mechanism of stress-assisted corrosion (SAC) is not fully understood; however, the consequences are all too familiar to the paper mill operating team in the utilities department. Knowing where to look and what to look for are keys to minimizing the propagation of SAC in boilers. This paper summarizes the identification of, the probable causes of, and inspecting for SAC in boilers. Recommendations developed by the authors to minimize SAC from both a mechanical and an operational/chemical perspective are presented and discussed.
