It is generally acknowledged that enzymes have the potential to provide beneficial effects at almost any stage in the pulp and papermaking process. These opportunities have not been realized for a combination of reasons that include poor correlation of the targeted process outcome with the appropriate enzymatic functionality and general lack of suitable enzymes able to work within the range of existing process conditions. New technologies for the development of advanced enzyme products based on the ability to discover potentially useful enzymes already existing in the diversity of nature are in use today. The power of this approach will be illustrated by referring to one of the best known uses of enzymes in paper production, namely the treatment of Kraft pulp with xylanase to reduce the requirement for bleaching chemicals.
