Environmental Considerations Related to Firing Petroleum Coke in Lime Kilns, 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference

PressWeb.jpg

A number of US paper mills recently began using petroleum coke (pet coke) as the primary fuel in their lime kilns. While firing pet coke in a lime kiln is an ideal application of the fuel because of the kiln’s inherent scrubbing capabilities, pet coke is an opportunity fuel that has applications in the paper industry beyond the lime kiln. Changes in air emissions associated with a fuel switch to pet coke may require air permitting activity. Determining air emission changes and the associated permitting implications is a mill-specific process. There are several factors that can affect the permitting analysis, including emission factors, amount of pet coke usage, and existing pollution control technology.
