Selecting the optimal target kappa for bleached pulp production requires balancing yield in cooking and bleaching with recovery boiler solids load, bleaching costs, wood costs, pulp mill throughput and the desired final papermaking qualities of the pulp. We will explore these criteria through a series of laboratory pulping and bleaching experiments on spruce and birch furnishes. For mills targeting a kappa significantly lower than the optimum, yield and cost improvements may result from raising the digester kappa target. Apart from increases in pulp yield, viscosity, and chemicals consumption, the laboratory results indicated less beating energy and better fiber qualities. Results from a mill trial will be presented to verify the laboratory results. The effect of cooking conditions on the carbohydrate content of the pulp will also be explored and related to improved pulp quality and yield.
