Black Liquor Gasification: The Foundation of the forest Bio-Refinery "New Value Streams", 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference
The U.S. pulp and paper industry has been evaluating it options to improve its ROI and its competitive position in the world. Through Agenda 2020, it is challenging long established paradigms for how it utilizes its resources. Key to transforming the industry to the Integrated Forest Bio-refinery of the future is gasification of black liquor and biomass. Milestones have been recently achieved with the startup of the world’s first black liquor gasifier which processes the mill’s total liquor flow. Looking into the future we see black liquor gasification replacing the chemical recovery boiler enabling the Integrated Forest Bio-refinery to become a reality. The opportunities for the pulp and paper industry to improve its financial performance include power generation, high value pulping strategies and new value product streams.
