It is well known that as fibers are recycled, burst and tensile decrease while tear tends to increase. In addition to the effect of fiber fractionation on sheet properties, fractionation also affects the sheet drying rate and the heat transfer characteristics during drying. This paper presents a study on the effect of fiber fractionation on the properties and drying behavior of recycled paper. Recycled fibers were separated using a Clark Classifier. These fibers were used to produce multiple layer sheets containing layers of different fiber coarseness. The paper properties and drying characteristics were analyzed. It was found that the drying behavior of the four drying stages have the same trend for all coarseness fractions, and the constant drying zone has a linear relation to the fiber length; as the fiber length decreases, the drying rate increases.
