Paper Recovery: Challenges and Opportunities, 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference
Paper recovery and recycling have reached record high levels of activity in the United States. This is not just a domestic phenomenon, but a global one. Paper recovery and recycling have been part of the domestic industry for more than 100 years, but with the public’s greater concern for the environment, and the industry’s enhanced environmental stewardship, it is now a large and essential part of the paper industry.
The paper industry as a whole, including box converters, employs 511,000 people and has sales of approximately $160 billion. The recycled paper and paperboard manufacturers alone have nearly 140,000 employees and $49 billion in annual receipts. Continuing to increase the amount of paper being recovered for recycling has become critically important to maintaining the recycling industry.
