Treatment of Non-Wood Black Liquors by Electrolysis and Lignin Precipitation, 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference

The application of conventional alkaline recovery technology to the processing of black liquors from non-wood pulping mills presents serious technical and economical challenges. The development of alternative technologies tailored to the characteristics of such liquors is a necessity, particularly for small capacity mills. In this paper we examine the technical and economical aspects of the application of electrolysis of weak black liquor combined with lignin precipitation as a treatment strategy for non-wood fibers pulping. Our evaluation shows that this concept (which was originally proposed for de-bottlenecking wood-based kraft mills with limitations in recovery boiler capacity) offers an attractive solution for small non-wood mills to recover caustic soda with a quality suitable for reuse by the mill in pulping and bleaching, and lignin for fuel or other value-added uses.
