Louisiana-Pacific Corporation (L-P), a leading North American forest products company, proactively seeks continuous improvement from its environmental processes, including its wastewater treatment plant operations. At its Roaring River hardboard facility in North Carolina, facility personnel determined that solids management within their activated sludge system was limiting the overall effectiveness of the entire treatment plant. They discovered that, by using a dissolved air flotation (DAF) unit for primary treatment, they could improve overall solids management. This paper describes how the facility evaluated, designed, and implemented an $800,000 wastewater treatment plant upgrade, using a primary treatment DAF unit as an efficient and effective means of removing solids from its system and improving its overall performance.
