Effect of Solids on Activated Sludge Aeration Basin Design for Biological Treatment of Pulp and Paper Mill Wastewater, 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference
The design of the activated sludge aeration basin for the treatment of a pulp and paper mill wastewater will be influenced by the portion of non-volatile suspended solids, since only active biomass will participate in the biological process.
Many industrial wastewaters, such as the one found in the pulp and paper industry, contain inert Volatile Suspended Solids (VSS) which accumulate in the aeration basin and form a part of the mixed liquor. The presence of elevated levels of inert VSS (due to pulp and fiber) in the wastewater will decrease the biological fraction of the Mixed Liquor Volatile Suspended Solids (MLVSS) and subsequently the active biomass available for organic biodegradation. In order to maintain the appropriate concentration of active biomass in the mixed liquor, the concentration of MLVSS must be correspondingly increased.
