Flow Cell Imaging Fiber Analysis, a New Way to Characterize Pulps, 2005 Engineering, Pulping and Environmental Conference
For several years industrialists and laboratories have been trying to find solutions to the challenges of pulp characterization. Conventional methods used in the past are based on screening or microscope inspection of pulp samples. Screening offers marginal precision at best with limited results. Fiber biometry gives the main characteristics of fibers but is time-consuming and tedious for the operator.
New optical techniques, as well as acquisition and treatment of digital images, have provided the paper industry with new efficient tools to determine fiber morphology. These new methods are based on the 2 following principles: the use a glass capillary tube system where fibers are forced in one by one and the use of a measuring cell where fibers are feed through an open cell.
