Pyrolysis of a Kraft Black Liquor Char Bed under an Impinging Gas Jet, 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference

A series of pyrolysis experiments were performed on a bed of black liquor char contained in aluminum oxide reactor exposed to an impinging gas jet. In the present study kraft black liquor char was produced under a nitrogen flow by slow pyrolysis at 500oC, and then ground to particle size range of 100 to 300 microns. Further pyrolysis of a packed bed of these particles is then studied under impingement flow while heating the bed at a rate of approximately 125oC/hr up to 815oC, and then maintain the reactor at this temperature until significant concentrations of carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide no longer could be measured in the effluent gas. The effect of bed thickness, impinging jet flow rate, and impinging jet gas composition (nitrogen, helium and the presence of carbon monoxide in nitrogen) were investigated to better understand high temperature pyrolysis of kraft black liquor in the char bed of a recovery boiler.
