Evaporator Fouling Mitigation - Case Studies, 2005 Engineering, Pulping & Environmental Conference

PressWeb.jpg

This paper demonstrates how understanding black liquor chemistry can help resolve scaling and plugging issues in black liquor evaporators. A case study is presented showing how the manipulation of carbonate-to-sulfate ratio was used to avoid dicarbonate scales. While not a typical scale. There have been some recent cases of sodium oxalate contributing to plugging of evaporator tubes and downstream equipment. Two such cases are discussed. Calcium carbonate scaling is a significant problem in many mills with modified pulping methods. Means of evaluating remediation techniques for this scaling problem are presented.
