What does aluminium foil have to do with hot tack in packaging?, 2005 European PLACE Conference
Descriptions of sealing performance in modern packaging usually place great
emphasis on that magic property “hot tack”.
Polymer manufacturers, in particular, like to describe hot tack as “a unique
property of the sealant plastics used” – this, in fact, only tells a part of the story.
This article explains why hot tack is a system property of all the components in a
laminate package, not just that of the sealant. Aluminium foil’s thermal
conductivity, being far higher than that of the other materials used in flexible
packaging, favours the rapid cooling of seal seams and helps to speed up the
packaging process.
Different laminates, some containing aluminium foil, others not - are compared
with regard to their sealing performance.
