Extrusion coating can trace its root back over 50 years as polyethylene was coated on paper or board stock in the United States. Over the years, changes in materials and equipment have taken a simple single layer coating of PE applied with a calendaring roll to multi-layer barrier coating with an internally deckled die. While a myriad of philosophies exist on where to focus optimization efforts, this paper will focus on the extrusion coating die.
