The Role of X-ray Sensor Technology in the Application of Extrusion Coating & Lamination, 2005 European PLACE Conference
This paper considers the role x-ray transmission sensors have in the measurement of coatings
and laminate layers.
The x-ray sensor has for a long time been regarded as a the poor relation in the world of gauging
technologies with the beta transmission sensors, infrared sensors and gamma backscatter
sensors all being the preferred choice. However, the situation is changing and the possibilities
and advantages that x-ray can deliver are starting to be realised in a number of applications
including the converting industry (extrusion coating and lamination).
The acceptance of x-ray sensors for the use in measurement of converted materials has come
about due to a change in attitudes and philosophies whilst the advancement of the hardware
technology has also promoted its use. Added to this, the fact that more stringent legislation (in
certain countries) in the use and importation of nucleonic isotopes has also led to a greater
interest and investment into x-ray technology development as people look for an alternative that
is easier to utilise.
This paper aims to assess the role for x-ray sensors and the advantages they can deliver.
