Effects of EB radiation on OPP Films, 2005 EuroPLACE Conference
in previous conferences and in the literature, the damaging effects of EB radiation on OPP films were described.
Beside the reduction of the mechanical strength, an impact on hot tack and seal strength has been found. The
question arose, how different types of sealing layers and types of recipes used in the appropriate OPP films
might be effected.
During the developments of OPP films, Treofan researchers an technicians discovered, that certain combinations
of sealing Polymers and slip agent systems react adversely on the impact of a corona treatment. It is known that
statistical co- and ter-Polymers in conjunction with silicone based slip agent systems loose very there sealability
and deteriorate in hot tack when a corona treatment is applied to this layer. The question was posed, whether the
same would happen when OPP films of similar recipes are exposed. Furthermore, we chose grades which are
equipped with different co- and ter-Polymers, and studied the effect of the EB radiation.
A further question was asked concerning the effect of a metallised layer on a transparent film as well as the
impact on white pigmented and white-opaque OPP films.
Finally, as it was proposed in earlier papers for an inline printing, release coating and cold seal coating, the
effects of EB radiation on a cold seal coating was tested.
