Russian paper mill automates ream wrapping with KPL, Solutions!, Online Exclusives, March 2005, Vol. 88(3)
Producing high quality product in a very competitive market is a key concern for banknote and security paper manufacturer Goznak, a member of the Ministry of Finance of the Russian Federation. For that reason, Goznak has decided to change production at its St. Petersburg, Russia paper mill from manual to automatic ream wrapping. To realize this objective, the mill has bought a folio-size ream wrapper GREC (Grande Risme Easy Compact) from KPL Packaging, a company of the Körber PaperLink Group. This purchase of the first GREC ever in the CIS countries was closed mid-November at the Polygraphinter fair in Moscow.
Actually, KPL machinery will handle more than just the packaging process of Goznak’s St. Petersburg mill. The reams to be packed on the GREC will be cut on an SHM 1450 folio-size sheeter from Pemco, another KPL company. This deal was finalized at this year’s Polygraphinter, too.
"The automation of the wrapping process sets us apart from competitors, because in Russia manual packaging of folio-size reams is still usual. With the investment in a GREC as well as in the SHM sheeter, we can now offer our customers packed reams of a much higher quality. Furthermore, this step will help us to increase our productivity," explains Michail Jakuba, chief engineer of the St. Petersburg paper mill.
"With the Goznak Group, we call one of the most established manufacturers of specialty papers in the Russian paper industry our client," summarizes Elena Tkatch, office manager of KPL Russia. "There are already KPL machines at Groznak’s Moscow and Krasnokamsk facilities in use. The new deals closed at Polygraphinter deepen our partnership further. We are looking forward to future projects with the Groznak group. "
GREC specs
The GREC is an automatic ream wrapper for paper sizes between 297 x 420 mm (A3) and, in the case of Groznak’s new machine, 1000 x 1400 mm. With a productivity of six reams a minute, the output of the GREC offers consistently tensioned reams of the highest quality. The machine needs little space because the footprint is comparable to that of a family car. The SHM 1450 HS SR bought by the St. Petersburg paper mill is a single rotary folio-size sheeter with a dual shaftless rollstand and web delivery system featuring individual automatic web tension control and a reject gate. It will be used to convert a wide range of conventional and also security paper qualities and grammages between 50 and 200 g/m2, and covers sizes from A4 to 1450 x 1500 mm at a maximum production speed of 300 m/min. Together, the SHM 1450 and the GREC are KPL’s System Solution from the reel to the packed pallet for the lower volume segment of the converting market.
