A wavelet-based technique for measuring print mottle was developed and validated to human perception. This technique was then used to determine instrumentally the effect of sheet formation on print mottle. For 89 sheets of commercial uncoated fine paper printed on a Heidelberg press, formation and print mottle were determined scaleby- scale and correlated. The highest correlation was found for the 5 - 8 mm range of scale of formation, with a R2 value of almost 0.5. Other scales of formation had little or no effect on print mottle. Thus formation explained about half of the print mottle variability of our set, and papermakers must improve formation within this specific 5 - 8 mm range of scale in order to improve printability.
