An Engineered Top Former Rebuild Producing Fine Paper from Recycled Furnish, 2005 Papermakers Conference

A fine paper machine running a 100% recycled furnish was rebuilt to increase production capacity, improve formation, and produce a structurally uniform sheet with respect to fine material. The existing Fourdrinier was the main production bottleneck on this machine due to the slow draining nature and sheet sealing tendencies of the furnish. The low inherent strength of the furnish and its susceptibility to crushing provided additional design challenges. To achieve rebuild goals, meet these design challenges, and provide operational flexibility, the original table was rearranged to provide gentle initial dewatering and a Pulse Frequency Top FormerTM engineered for high capacity and incrementally increasing drainage pulses was added. This report describes the nature of this rebuild and reviews the impact of top former operational variables on sheet quality.
