A New Two-Component Lint Control Strategy for Wood-Containing Paper Manufacturing, 2005 Papermakers Conference

Lint is still a problem in most pressrooms using mechanical grade papers. Even though beneficial effects can be achieved through mechanical adjustments at the refiner and drying and calendering sections, chemical additives are still widely used to reduce the linting propensity of paper. Our objectives were first to develop a simple methodology that could correlate laboratory scale to papermill results. Then we have used this technique to evaluate the performance of a new lint control chemicals based on phosphate ester surfactants. The performance of these new chemicals was compared to existing lint control chemicals both in laboratory trials. In all cases, the new phosphate ester-based emulsion gave the most significant lint reduction and mill trials were conducted. Treated and untreated samples were obtained from both the mills and pressrooms running the paper. Results indicate that, in both cases, lint was reduced significantly compared to former lint control chemicals used. Pressroom runnability was also greatly improved.
