Improved Papermaking Using the Next Generation of Triple-Layer Forming Fabrics, 2005 Papermakers Conference
The current condition of the paper industry has forced the papermaker to exceed expectations for both sheet quality
and machine efficiency. Only machines making the highest quality paper at the lowest cost and with the greatest
efficiencies will survive in this increasingly demanding market. The focus of Albany International Forming Fabrics
is the continued development of new products to target these objectives and provide value to the customer. This
value, achieved through improved productivity, reduced raw materials, and reduced energy consumption, has driven
these new product developments. The latest advancements in forming fabric technology utilize the InLine binder
concept. This concept is unique in that it incorporates IWB (integrated warp binders) that are woven into the MD
(machine direction) of the fabric. The outcome has been a new generation of triple-layer forming fabrics, which is
repeatedly giving the papermaker improved first pass retention and/or reduced retention aid usage, increased
drainage capacity, wet end cleanliness, and better sheet dryness into the press section. All of these benefits have led
to a better formed sheet and savings to the papermaker as a result of reduced chemical usage, reduced energy
consumption, and improved efficiencies.
