Insolubilizers for Size Press Applications, 2005 Papermakers Conference
Size press formulations have evolved over the years from simple starch-based formulations to complete
paper machine coating formulations. This evolution is continuing as more mills attempt to develop new
and more profitable grades. Changing of the size press formulations presents an opportunity for the use of
additives that normally are not needed in a size press. Insolubilizers are one of these types of additives. If
the correct guidelines are followed when choosing an insolubilizer they can improve a size press
formulation in several ways. This paper will attempt to explain the guidelines for the correct choice of
insolubilizer and the many types of benefits that can be gained from their use.
