New Technologies Eliminate Starch Cooking --- With Surprising Opportunities, 2005 Papermakers Conference
Traditional starch products for papermaking require cooking before use. But the cooker adds significant cost to an
otherwise inexpensive material because of capital, maintenance, operating cost, and manpower. Therefore mills
must choose between operating a cooking kitchen and purchasing more expensive synthetic alternatives. This paper
will describe the advancing technology of liquid, ready-to-use, starch based products that provide an alternative.
Intermediate in cost between cook-up products and synthetics, these liquid products fill a growing niche where
convenience and cost saving are both important. Examples will include applications in wet end, surface treatment,
and adhesives.
