My TAPPI Story: Naomi Gehling
The paper reviews a current state of the art and opportunities for the use of plasma surface treatment in the coating and conversion of paper products. Preliminary results on the paper surface activation, chitosan immobilization, and surface hydrophobization using a novel low-cost high-speed method for atmospheric-pressure on-line plasma treatment of paper surfaces are presented. The method has a significant potential particularly in combination with extrusion coating and flexographic printing of PE and PP-coated paperboard using water-based inks, as well as with emerging novel paper surfaces processings, such as dry and spray paper coatings. In addition the method is believed to have the capability to enhance the conventional paper treatment techniques as surface sizing and impregnation.
