A study was carried out using an Entrained Flow Reactor (EFR) to examine the effect of SO2 concentration in the combustion gas on the deposition rate, composition and adhesion strength of carryover deposits produced from burning dried black liquor. The results imply that SO2 is not the main cause of fouling in the superheater region of recovery boilers. High SO2 may even be beneficial, as it helps produce deposits that are easier to be removed by sootblowers. In recovery boilers where high SO2 and excessive carryover fouling are observed at the same time, it is likely that they are a result of other boiler operating factors.
