Purchased Power Optimization (PPO) was implemented in a large southeastern United States paper mill. Fundamentally, this is an automated method to drive up industrial electrical generation when utility-supplied power is expensive and then lower it when the utility-supplied power is cheap. The guiding principles for these methods are given in this paper along with an analysis of results from long term operation of the implemented system.
