Kraft steaming vessels in continuous digester systems can suffer corrosion, erosion, and cracking problems. Carbon steel vessels are subject to both internal and external corrosion thinning. Austenitic stainless steel vessels can experience external stress corrosion cracking (SCC) beneath wet thermal insulation, internal SCC, erosion thinning, and cracking of the screw shaft cladding due to both fatigue and SCC. Duplex stainless steel vessels are more resistant to corrosion and cracking but are susceptible to thinning due to erosion and to corrosion under deposits. Several inspection case histories are presented showing alternatives for repair to corrosion, erosion, and cracking damage. An inspection protocol for steaming vessels is presented.
