Polysulfide (PS) cooking is one of the most efficient technologies available today to increase pulp yield. PS liquor addition to digester increases Kraft pulp (KP) yield. Increasing KP yield is economically important for both Japanese mills (which depend on mostly imported wood chips as raw materials) and overseas mills (which wish to increase pulp production). It is also ecologically important because it can save wood resources and energy. Conventionally, PS liquor is produced by air-oxidation of white liquor (WL) in the presence of a catalyst. However, the maximum concentration of PS liquor is limited by the air oxidation process because of undesirable by-product generation.
