Film imperfections such as gels are commonly encountered in the extrusion process. These defects can result in production downtime and lost of product performance. Understanding their origin and how to troubleshoot them can help to minimize their occurrence. A review of the different types of gels typically found in polyethylene, along with a suggested troubleshooting process and methods to reduce specific gel types will be discussed.
