High speed, energy input (HSEI) twin screw extruders are used for compounding, devolatilization and reactive extrusion. Approximately 90% of HSEI twin screw extruders produce pellets that are then fed into a single screw extruder that produces a sheet, film, fiber or profile. The dimensional stability of the pellets is typically not critical. The focus of this paper is on the technology trend to extrude a film or sheet from a HSEI twin screw extruder, referred to as direct extrusion.
