Identifying, diagnosing and solving process problems is a task best performed by coupling process knowledge with real time diagnostic information. The value of an on-line gauging system is well established when it comes to process control and economics (raw material savings, quality improvements, throughput increases, and scrap reduction). However, on-line gauging may be underestimated when it comes to diagnostics. The purpose of this paper is to focus attention on these systems as an important source of real time diagnostic information.
