Packaging is a fast growing market for energy curable (EC) inks and coatings. In particular, food packaging applications have shown a sustained interest/use of EC technology due to its many beneficial aspects in the areas of productivity, performance, and ecology. In an effort to further expand the use of EC inks and coatings in food packaging applications, products have been developed that can be formulated to give lower odor and lower extractables in these inks and coatings. These products, their performance in inks and coatings, and methods to determine odor and extractables are presented in this paper.
