Producers and suppliers of paper – based packaging materials have been losing ground in recent years in many segments of the flexible packaging market. Plastic, film, and composite packaging substrates have gained share due to better value propositions in selected market segments that more effectively meet emerging consumer needs. Despite the growth of these alternatives, many buyers of packaging materials still have growing, unmet needs for packaging-related solutions that could be effectively addressed by paper-based substrates. However, the paper industry and individual packaging paper suppliers are still not well positioned to effectively respond to these needs. In many cases, companies will need to change their business focus and marketing strategies to take advantage of these emerging opportunities.
