Processing conditions have a significant effect on moisture barrier properties for film produced using high density polyethylene (HDPE). This paper studies the effects of orientation imparted during the blown film process and of process time to better understand which parameter has the greatest influence on moisture barrier performance for two types of HDPE materials. The results indicate that the moisture barrier performance of a conventional catalyzed material and a dual reactor single site catalyzed HDPE grade differed significantly. Whereas the conventional catalyzed resin is sensitive to process time and draw down ratio, the moisture barrier performance of the single site catalyzed product was found to be insensitive to processing conditions and yielded superior moisture barrier properties over the conventional HDPE product.
