Changes in mill operational practices have inadvertently increased the incidence of foul odors in finished paper products. This paper will discuss various odiferous chemicals and operational practices that have been found to contribute to such problems. Sources of the odors include poor pulp washing, microbial spoilage, spilled chemicals, etc. Since many odors are not detected immediately, business can be lost through shipment of tainted product. Examples from mills will be discussed as well as recommendations for outbreak mitigation.
