In this study, multivariante regression analysis was used to analyze the influence of pigment properties, coating weight and calendering conditions on the micro-gloss and micro-gloss non-uniformity of coated papers. Delaminated, undelaminated, and engineered kaolin clays, as well as ground calcium carbonates were included in the study. The analysis showed that pigment size and shape, and coating and calendering conditions had strong effect on the micro-gloss. However, the broadness of pigment size distribution had no significant impact on the average micro-gloss and its variability. Trends found at the micro-scale are in good agreement with previous results found at the macro-scale.
