Over the past three years, NCASI has conducted extensive studies aimed at quantifying the emissions of reduced sulfur compounds from wastewater treatment system components at kraft pulp mills. Included among the components of wastewater treatment systems studied were pre-aeration basins/ponds, primary clarifiers, aeration basins and post-aeration basins. Mills which practiced hard piping of the condensates and those that practice steam stripping were included. The results of the study show that large pre-aeration basins were the major contributor to H2S emissions from wastewater treatment systems. Primary clarifiers, well-aerated ASBs and activated sludge reactors were small sources of H2S. Post-aeration ponds were insignificant sources of H2S. The organic reduced sulfur compound emissions were significant from ASBs with hard piping.
