Enzyme applications in pulp and paper have been investigated since the late ‘70’s but with few commercial successes. These opportunities have not been realized for a combination of reasons. Poor correlation of the targeted process outcome with the enzymatic action on the fiber plus lack of enzymes able to work within the range of process conditions separately or together have given inadequate commercial results in mills. Today, there are new technologies for the development of advanced enzyme products based on the ability to discover potentially useful enzymes already existing in the diversity of nature. This technology has been successfully applied to the development of new commercial xylanase products for bleaching enhancement. These products have been used by some mills to decrease bleaching costs while other mills have been able to achieve higher pulp brightness than ever before.
