This work was conducted as a TAPPI TIP Committee work with numerous inputs from industry. A classification system for the need for post fabrication cleaning is described to enable the equipment owner to decide on the necessary cleaning without relying on the equipment seller or service supplier. The deciding factor is the environment in which each surface is operating. The need is categorized from 1 (most stringent) to 6 (least stringent). Once decided, the surface classification category guides the selection of cleaning method, inspection method, inspection coverage, and acceptance criteria.
