Bangladesh is facing an acute shortage of fibrous raw materials for pulp production. Dhaincha (Sesbania aculeata) is one of the potential nonwood plants in Bangladesh. Fiber dimensions, their derived values and chemical properties of dhaincha have been examined to assess their suitability for paper production. Dhaincha is a short fiber that can be used as a substitute for hardwood. The flexibility coefficient of dhaincha is better than hardwood. Lignin, á-cellulose and pentosan content in dhaincha are within the range of hardwood. Pulping of dhaincha was performed by the soda-anthraquinone (AQ) process. It was delignified to kappa number around 29 with a screened pulp yield of about 43 %. Oxygen delignification reduced the kappa number of dhaincha pulp by 44 % without significant drop in viscosity. The bleaching of dhaincha pulp did not respond very well. The brightness of dhaincha (S. aculeata) pulp reached about 71 % on OQPP and 79 % on ODED bleaching sequences. The soda-AQ process produced pulp of higher tensile index and moderate tear index. An unbleached packaging grade paper could be produced from dhaincha pulp
