Design of Experiments (DOE) methodology using black liquor model systems clearly demonstrated the influence of black liquor components on the performance of silicone foam control agents. No influence was observed by varying the levels of resin acids or lignin. Fatty acids and neutral components were identified as key influencing factors. Increased fatty acids levels reduced both knockdown and persistence of three silicone foam control agents. Increased neutral components levels improved foam control agent performance. However, as expected, the profile of performance variation was different for each foam control agent.
