In the past few years there has been a significant shift in the chemistries used for foam control and drainage improvement in kraft pulp washing. Conventional technology had been to use oil-based defoamers; the best available technology now is silicone-based chemistry.
The advantages provided by the newer technology include eliminating the dependence on petroleum based chemistry. The cost of oil-based materials is volatile, and very often there were pitch-like deposits caused by components of oil-based defoamers. The silicone chemistries are much more efficient and are provided in water-based formulas.
