Several theories exist to identify the theoretical parameters to quantify the high-complexity of the phenomena produced inside a disc refiner on fibres. Moreover, these parameters are also independent of the refining platforms and allow comparisons of the effects of the mechanical action on fibres. Examples of these quantities are namely the Specific Edge Load (SEL) or the Surface Specific Load (SSL). In order to perform such a biunique relation between theoretical quantities and effects on fibres, net quantities of refiner functioning during beating has to be determined. Generally, their values correspond to the difference between the no-load stage and the refining stage.
This paper deals with both the measurement of idle power and the calculation of the normal pure force exerted on fibres in bar inter-crossing areas.
