The implementation of constrained Model Predictive Control to paper machines cross directional processes presents technical challenges. The ability to optimize the existing CD actuators to achieve the most uniform CD profiles provides the economic incentive to implement these schemes on paper machines. This paper will review some of the technical challenges using Model Predictive Control but mainly will focus on the implementation of a CD Multivariable Model Predicitve Control (MPC) on newsprint and linerboard machines. Special attention is given to the improvements achieved using MPC versus Traditional CD Control.
