The Emveco Smoothness instrument was conceived and developed by Emveco, Inc. Newberg, Oregon approximately seventeen years ago as a result of a need for better printing surfaces for liner board. The ability to print directly on linerboard packaging material eliminated the intermediate step of printing labels for point of sales items. This new technology spread quickly throughout the linerboard industry, and after a few years most linerboard was being specified by the Emveco Number.

More recent developments have addressed the need for greater precision and accuracy in measurement techniques. To this end a nearly frictionless stylus support system has been devised and tested along with a precision 25-micrometer spherical diamond stylus tip. Extensive laboratory testing has proven that these developments provide more accurate and reliable Emveco Numbers, not only on linerboard, but on finer paper grades as well.

Newly engineered sensor heads will soon be made available for retrofit into all existing Emveco 210-R smoothness instruments.
