Throughout the paper industry we use saveall or d.a.f. clarification to recover fiber, but these techniques also drag filler and fines back into the process. Depending on the process specifics, retaining fines and filler with the fiber may be undesirable. The retention of fines reduces freeness which can reduce machine speed. Retaining filler or other system trash can increase chemical usage needed to stabilize wet end chemistry. New technology is available to separate usable fiber from ash and fines. A fractionating saveall provides users the capability to manage whitewater by retaining usable fiber to lower sewer loss while removing fines and ash to maximize machine efficiency.
