Retention and drainage programs are a pivotal wet end function as they directly impact machine productivity, performance and efficiency of additives and to a certain extent, paper or board quality. The propensity for these programs to either retain "hard" or drain "fast" often leads to a compromise in performance, and thus requires a balance so that neither paper or board quality will suffer. Experience in applying a unique retention program utilizing microparticle and micropolymer technology coupled with a "Wet End Solutions" approach has allowed for some of these barriers to be lifted, resulting in improved formation, smoothness, porosity and pore size distribution and enabling the efficient production of high and very high brightness paper grades.
